IASC Counseling Statement
The International Association for Space Counseling advances counseling-informed behavioral-health practice for individuals, families, teams, and communities affected by spaceflight, aerospace work, remote operations, and extreme-environment missions. IASC promotes ethically grounded, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and evidence-informed counseling approaches that support resilience, meaning-making, interpersonal functioning, psychological safety, and continuity of care across the pre-mission, training, operational, transition, and post-mission continuum.
IASC recognizes that space-related counseling may involve unique stressors, including isolation and confinement, separation from family and Earth-based supports, high-consequence decision-making, disrupted routines, uncertainty, technological mediation, cross-cultural teamwork, public visibility, and reintegration challenges. The Association supports clear ethical boundaries between confidential counseling, organizational consultation, fitness-for-duty assessment, and emergency intervention.
